The Knee Joint

The knee is a complex joint where the lower end of thigh bone (femur) and the upper end of the leg bone (tibia) are connected. The weight of the body is transmitted from the femur to the tibia. The“cartilage” (cushioning tissue) is attached to the surfaces of the femur and the tibia where they come in contact. Cartilage provides smooth cushioning and allows easy movement with lubricating fluid called as synovial fluid. Thus the bones do not touch during the movement; the cartilage covering the bone does, and forms a cushion between the bones.

Hip Replacement

Normal Hip Joint : The Hip Joint is a joint which allows movement between the thigh bone (Femur) and the Hip bone (Pelvis). The bones are covered by a smooth shiny surface called the cartilage. This facilitates painless free mobility in all directions and planes. The cartilage acts a cushion (shock absorber). Arthritic Hip : Wear & tear of the cartilage leads to arthritis, which is painful, as the damaged bones rub against each other. Patients feel pain in the groin and buttock area. Patients may also develop a limp. An arthritic hip hampers daily activities.

Arthroscopic Surgery

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows orthopaedic surgeons to assess – and in most cases, treat – a range of conditions affecting the knee joint. During the procedure, we make small incisions or portals in the affected joint, and then inserts a tiny camera and fiber optics to light the interior space.
